History
Until 1992, the 27th fighter aviation regiment (MiG-21 aircraft) was based at the airfield. It accepted regular civilian flights from Almaty (Yak-40 aircraft) and Taldykorgan.
In 2015-2017, the airport's runway was repaired, a new taxiway and apron for 2 aircraft were built, and a new terminal building was constructed. The airport reopened for civilian seasonal flights on July 21, 2017.
In 2021-2022, the runway, taxiways, and apron with parking spaces were reconstructed.
In 2018, thanks to the government subsidy program aimed at developing domestic tourism, Usharal began accepting direct flights from Almaty again. This simplified routes to the healing sanatoriums on the shores of Lake Alakol, known for its healing properties.
